Leon III

03/15/2019

Leon III (say it “Leon the Third”) consists of Andy Stepanian (vocals, guitar, songwriter) and Mason Brent (guitar, bass, banjo) along with a revolving cast of studio and live players. The duo takes another step deeper into the psych-folk wilderness with their sophomore album, Antlers in Velvet (MonoSonic). The first single and lead off track, a nearly 10 minute long sonic journey called ’Fly Migrator’, is a clear statement that the duo are continuing to sharpen their form of oblique psychedelia and push the limits of their compositions into territory which might interest fans of Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead. Along the way, the duo does not abandon Stepanian’s propensity toward introspective and thematically connected songwriting.
Like their self-titled 2018 debut, Antlers in Velvet elicits the help of producer Mark Nevers (Silver Jews, Bonnie Prince Billy ) and musicians such as Matt Pence (Centro-matic), William Tyler, Kai Welch, Jordan Caress (Ponychase), Tony Crow (Lambchop), Dana Colley (Morphine) & Paul Niehaus (Calexico).
Many know Stepanian and Brent from their other band, Wrinkle Neck Mules, a 19+ year old project with a cult-like following that, to date, has 7 albums of cerebral country and bluegrass-leaning rock under it’s belt. They also collaborate on Howler Brothers, a popular outdoor clothing line based in Austin, Texas, which they help operate and which bears their artistic imprimatur.
Antlers in Velvet is out everywhere March 5, 2021.
